Why should I study the martial arts?
The root of all martial arts lies in warfare. Clearly, hand-to-hand combat is not a viable method of warfare today. So the reasons for doing the martial arts have evloved. The reason for practicing the martial arts varies from person to person, and even evolves as a person spends more time. The following are some of the common reasons people practice the martial arts:
Physical:
A regular training schedule is the first step towards building a healthy body. For some, it is also a good way to release stress built up during the day. For others it is a way to let go of all the little things that are bothering us and focus on something physical for a couple of hours. Training in the martial arts also requires a development of strength, speed, flexibility, and stamina.
Self-defence:
There are situations in life when we have no choice but to defend ourselves. Training in the martial arts includes
- spending some time thinking about such situations
- learning about what actions are appropriate in what situations
- and learning about what actions you can (and should or should not) take when the need arises
Philosophy and Spirituality:
Since the body and the mind are intimately connected, in the process of training our bodies, we also learn more about ourselves and our minds. The process of learning also involves introspection, which can lead to spiritual development. Also, martial arts are based in philosophy (Buddhism, Zen, etc.), and aspects of these philosophies can be found and studied in the martial arts.
